Dunno the purpose of that window, AFAIK the Buffs at Singapore had them over painted, so they can't be that important. However I do like your pub spotting suggestion, a most vital and important role if there ever was one!
 
The early model Corsairs also had a window on the bottom to aid in landing I believe. They were deleted in later models because, as you may know, the Corsair didn't have any floor (at least not -1s), and all kinds of crap would collect down there and block out the window anyway.
