I don't recall there being a good, modern movie about the Pacific war in many years. It is good to see someone tackling it. In many ways, it was more brutal and inhumane than Europe.
The Thin Red Line tried very hard but IMO, was short of great. i think it was choked by poor casting and bombastic directing.
The imagery of the elephant grass and the mud were very effective though.
I thought "Letters From Iwo Jima" was very good too.--------

"The Great Raid"...dunno if anyone's mentioned it here yet. That was another great movie, that followed pretty darn close with the book ("Ghost Soldiers")...except for the plane that was supposed to cause a diversion. Man, I was sooooo lookin forward to seein the P-61 fly!!!! Dangit!
