We return to the river cruise and that magnificent Indian summer we had in Europe last October.
After a morning of holiness visiting the popes former lodgings we elected to have an afternoon taking in the French countryside and excellent wines. Sadly even though efforts were made (Hic) to photo record the events, (Hic) pictures of this venture were (Hic) sadly lacking.
We did start okay with a good lesson in assessing the wines bouquet before the quaffing began.
Out in the wine grove which in this region has the ground literally covered in pebbles imported from the beach. As for this very desirable summer residence, the photo cost me a bee sting on my big toe, OUCH.
After this things became a little hazy.
The next morning's recovery was quietly spent cruising up the river
past a huge hydro power station, eight turbines I think, a wind farm and a nuclear power plant. It also took us through one of the deepest locks on the river.
Coming out of the lock we approached a number of chalk cliffs which the river passed through. It is also seems part of human nature to put something on the highest point be it an obelisk (mostly in UK), a statue or a shrine.
Fishing in a way I've never seen before.

Neat shots, Vic. That fishing is called Float Tubing. A lot of fly fisherman use those in the Sierras. I have photos around here somewhere of my father-in-law in his up in Mammoth.

Thanks also Dave for that info, it's a new one on me but I can see its potential on a nice slow flowing river but I recon the old toes and bum would get a bit cold.

Depends on the fish, and the cook. My father-in-law typically catches rainbow trout and brown trout. He does a lot of catch and release with fly fishing. He does occasionally get an Alper's trout, which are big and really tasty. A reasonable Alper's trout will feed a family of 4. Those he keeps.

The next day dawned quite cold and very wet but this was not going to daunt any sprits. We had docked in the city of Vienne overnight and again a morning tour had been arranged for us all.
Vieene actually has its own Eifel Tower high on a hill overlooking the city. It is a duplicate of the real thing in Paris though much smaller in size but because of the location, can boast at being higher than the Paris tower. Sadly heavy mist prevented pictures.
Some views of the city as we came down out of the clouds.
The Saint-Maurice Cathedral
Vienne is a city of cobbled streets, narrow covered passages between streets and lots of towers which seem to serve no purpose except to decorate the architecture of the house. I believe that in times gone by they demonstrated the wealth of the family living in the adjacent building.
