I'm very glad to have been sent this article today ( link shows Veteran's injuries) RSA for non- NZer's stands for 'Returned Services Association'
A teenager has been jailed for almost nine years for bashing an 85-year-old war veteran and attempting to steal his car outside a south Auckland RSA.
Eric Brady 's jaw was broken in at least two places and he was badly bruised about the face following the attack in February.
His 19-year-old attacker Maurangi Pere was on bail at the time of the attack, and had been on a month-long crime spree.
Pere faced charges of causing grievous bodily harm, being armed with a knife and stealing Mr Brady's keys.
He had committed other offences, including burglaries and car-jacking the vehicle of a 65-year-old man at knife-point, the Manukau District Court heard today.
Sentencing Pere, Judge Blackie told him it was a cowardly crime, and he had attacked a man who had risked his own life to protect him and the rest of the country in World War 2, Radio New Zealand reported.
Judge Blackie sentenced Pere to eight years 10 months in jail with a minimum non-parole period of four years.
