I am WAY late to this thread. FWIW the last cinema I attended was Dunkirk for review purposes, and it was dreadful. Marginal script, nowhere up to the Dunkirk standard of Mrs. Miniver or the 1958 film with John Mills & Dickie Attenborough. The sound was appalling--downright painful, and some people left rather than continue exposure to high decibels. The real-life Spits were nice although the details were poorly handled. Ditch with canopy closed? Right. And that miles-long low-level glide ratio with engine failure, LANDING WHEELS DOWN FOR THE GERMANS. (Though apparently it did happen, poor headwork, that.) However, recently saw a report that Dunkirk is the highest-grossing WW2 film in ages.
