So, a little progress on my T-34. Managed to get together the tracks and set out to try and paint/weather these. For a first-timer (when it comes to AFV's) I think they didn't come out half bad. I just sprayed an initial black-grey base paint coat on the tracks (and sealed it with future), picked out parts subject to wear and tear and in direct contact with the ground with ModelMaster Metalizers (that worked very nicely indeed) and used what little pigments I had (scraped from two pastel chalks I bought a while ago out of curiosity) and used that to dust it up a little bit. Fixed the pigments with Vallejo thinner (which is actually some sort of clear acrylic resin)

Further weathering can ofcourse be applied depending on where I want to go with the final result (mostly dusty summer '41, muddy for a fall '41 setting, or maybe even a winter '41/'42 setting) I therefore stopped the weathering in this state and hope to pick it up as needed down the line. I did order some additional pigments 'cause two brown pastels chalks seems not enough for all round weather a tank.

I tried pencil too Wurger, but that didn't quite cut it for me, that's where the ModelMaster Metalizers came in (mostly the darker ones such burned metal and exhaust). I didn't apply them as usual with the airbrush, but rather dipped a cottonbud in the bottle and let that dry up for a bit (as the solvent is pretty aggressive and easily strips off underlying paint coats and such) and then kind of rubbed/dry-brushed the metal particles on the appropriate aera's such as edges, the profile on the tracks and such. Come to think of it, I could have tried graphite paper as well.

Be a little careful with the rust though - I have a friend here who is a tank nut and always rusts the tracks too. Thing is, the only tracks I've seen rust on personally were on museum tanks sittting for years in the open.
 
Ye, in this stage it is supposed to represent a rather thick layer of dust or a somewhat muddy look, which I think still needs a little work and perhaps toning down or use of different pigments to make it look like that completely. I'm still waiting on a new batch of additional pigments to get to that though (hope to get them today). I think the spare track-links that are carried on various around the tank would be more subject to rust since they just sit there for the most part and are not subject to wear and tear like the complete track is, especially if I end up going for a mud-season '41 T-34 (think september/october '41)
 
Yep, would agree there. Tracks 'in use' (atleast those that I've seen) are often wet from grease or oil, and worn a little where contact is made with the drive and sprocket wheels, with clumps of dirt or mud in the link joints, depending on where the tank's being operated.
 
With a week off (finally) I wanted to get some more work done on my T-34. After having started work on the tracks it was also time to get some paint on the tank itself. Compared to a typical complicated paintscheme on an aircraft laying down a basic color coat on a Russian tank isn't exactly complicated. Preshaded a few areas in flat black, then in with the basic green color, and topped it off with a lightened up mix (by means of a few drop of light grey) based on the green base color.
