Deep Purple are an English hard rock band formed in Hertfordshire in 1968. Along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, they are considered one of the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, although the members of the band have always refused to label themselves as heavy metal. The band has also incorporated pop and progressive rock elements , was once listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's loudest band, and has sold over 100 million albums worldwide.
 

Great band but only the greatest if you like Grunge, and I dont think Grunge is the best. They dont hold a candle to the gods of rock Metallica.

Their are many fine band's on that list...but most of them are NOT Rock Roll bands...Example: Black Sabbath is one of my favorite "all time" bands but I wouldn't call them Rock Roll, I might call them "Hard Rock" or maybe "Heavy Metal" but not Rock Roll...anyway, for me the best Rock Roll band on that list is the "Rolling Stones"...

p.s. I was a little surprised that "Motor Head" is not on the list...

Rock n Roll ecompases all of those genres my friend.

People like Iron Maiden refer to themselves as rock n roll at times.

If we over genrised ( my new word ) there would never be a clean cut answer.

As for Motorhead I too am suprised that I haven't noticed it was missing.
 

Rock and Roll is the Genre of Music.

Hard Rock and Heavy Metal are Sub-Genre's of Rock and Roll.

And Yes Motorhead should be on the list as well. I cant wait to see them again on the same stage as Metallica next summer.
 
I'm not a fan at all of heavy metal and such. But, I have to admit there are some tracks that I DO like, AC DC's Thunderstruck and Money Talks(?) to mention but two. And I do respect peoples taste and views in this matter as it gives plenty of interesting conversation and good banter. Should I EVER step over the line, I do apologise for that now and you can slap me on the back of my head when it happens..."OI BACK IN LINE!"

Why?

Did you only listen to the Black Metal and Death Metal.

You should have checked out the other stuff. There is some really good metal out there ranging from Metallica to Lacuna Coil.
 
A question for those who were in their late teens or twenties in the early 70s, or who perhaps had the chance to attend rock concerts during that period of time...

That was the time when 2 bands that are considered as some of the greatest rock acts ever were alive: Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

My question: which of those 2 you think was the most powerful during such time? If powerful seems a confusing term, then think which one was more important or consider any of the following elements:

- Fanbase
- Albums sold
- Tours

As a necessary remark i´d say this is not to ask you which one was your favorite. I need your objectiveness.

The point is i just came across another heated "rock debate" where a bunch of guys were discussing which of the 2 had the greatest impact in rock music.

One noted that -musical skills and quality put aside- Pink Floyd attained a somewhat superior notoriety because Led Zeppelin was disbanded in 1979/1980 (forgot the year) when their drummer died, whereas Pink Floyd did continue with its musical career. Pink Floyd continued making albums and touring for an extra 20 years or so after Led Zeppelin´s dissapearance.

When Pink FLoyd and Led Zeppelin were in the boxing ring, which one ruled?

What are your thoughts?
 
In my part of the world? Zep!

Floyd was well listened to but it seemed the heavy duty "stoners" seemed to be more into Floyd - a good mix with the drug culture of the era.
 
I was not around to see them in the 70s but both bands are great bands.

As a metalhead I tend to listen to Led Zep the most out of the two but Pink Floyd was a great band as well.
