WWI German U-boat found sunk off Netherlands

A German U-boat of the same era as this one, photographed in 1916, has been found off the coast of the Netherlands.

Dutch researchers found the wreck of a World War I German submarine in 2009 but kept the discovery secret until this week, Radio Netherlands Worldwide reported.

The crew of the research ship HNLMS Snellius hoped they'd found a Dutch submarine that disappeared in 1940, but the vessel turned out to be much older. A brass plate indicated the sub was the German U-106, which sank during World War I, the radio report said.

The announcement of the discovery was delayed while German officials confirmed the sub's identity and sought out relatives of crew members, according to the radio report.

A Dutch navy spokesman told Radio Netherlands the U-boat would not be raised but would be designated a war memorial.

De vondst zette een reeks onderzoeksmissies in gang. ,,In die wateren is de O-13 de enige Nederlandse onderzeeër die vermist is. Bij Indonesië liggen er ook enkele op de bodem van de zee."
De mijnenjager Hr. Ms. Maassluis onderzocht in december van 2009 de locatie op veertig meter diepte met de Seafox, een onderwatercamera. Het leverde de contouren op van een onderzeeboot en twee maanden later werd een uitgebreidere poging gedaan om de herkomst van het schip te achterhalen. Daarbij werden een duikteam en de draadloze onderwaterrobot Remus ingezet. De duikers wisten een cilindervormige luchttank van 300 bij 44 centimeter, gebruikt voor het duiken en stijgen, naar boven te halen.
