Most descriptions of the rushed production of the Spitfire 5 state that the two speed Merlins could not be accommodated because of their extra length. This is of course rubbish since the ever adaptable Spitfire easily accommodated the very much longer two speed two stage Merlins and even the two...

This passage from 430 Squadron's Operations Record Book regarding Spitfire XIVs equipped with nitrogen drop tanks has me puzzled: (Click image to enlarge) The operational use of nitrous oxide by Mosquito aircraft comes to mind, see for example this combat report. Does anyone have any...

Sorry about the error in the title: It should say P-39! I found this s picture when researching the U.S.Army in the North African Campaign. It was listed as a P-38 wreck but I think it is a P-39 Airacobra. I wondered if it is a Spitfire wreck but I'm leaning towards a P-39. It doesn't look...

Time and time again we see this most important single factor in the performance of any aircraft ignored in discussions. Everyone knows that a Spitfire I can out turn a Bf 109 E and that the Messerschmitt pilot would be ill advised to fight in the horizontal, right? Well, for the two...

RAF Museum handed over Spitfire in 'ill-conceived' deal for WWII aircraft it may never receive. Museum bosses admit they 'paid' a salvage team a Spitfire worth £200,000 to recover an aircraft found intact in the Sahara Desert 70 years after it crashed. A valuable Spitfire has been lost to the...

Hello, Need advice to build a Spitfire Mk.IIb in 1/48 (tamiya prefered)... The project is Spitfire Mk.IIb P8330 RF-D flown by M. Gladych 23 June 1941. If I'm not mistaken, the best way is to start with Spitfire Vb, replace the oil cooler (Mk.I/II), add the small tear-shaped fairing to the...

For a client, Aero Legends based at Headcorn, the old Battle of Britain airfield in Kent, I have created a high resolution interactive cockpit panorama of their Spitfire Mark IX, TD314. The aircraft was built 1944 at Castle Bromwich, and has been completely and brilliantly restored by the...

Hello, Here is one of my projects: Spitfire IX EN190 flown by Colin F. Gray during March and early April 1943. But I've a problem..... :( Sources differ regarding the code of EN190: some says FL A and other says FL K... I found both on the web...!!! My opinion: I think EN190 was coded FL A...
