Thanks Kevin. It's now really starting to take shape.
PIC 1. The basic camouflage colours of Dark Green and Ocean Grey have been sprayed on freehand, following pencil lines marking out the pattern, and refereing to a photograph of the subject aircraft, RB167, DW-E, of 610 (County of Chester) Sqn., RAF. Although this aircraft was in the standard day fighter scheme of the period (summer 1944), there were a couple of minor differences in the pattern applied to the fuselage. Humbrol enamels were used for the camouflage, with the green once more causing problems, this time drying with a patchy, sometimes 'dusty' appearance. But I'm (fairly) confident that this will smooth out once the clear coats are applied.
PICS 2 and 3 show the model after spraying, with the masking removed, and the yellow wing leading-edge ID bands added. Some light panel lines have been added, and any weathering will be kept to a minimum, as this was a relatively new aircraft.
PIC 4. The large 5 bladed prop has been painted and decalled, although it still needs a little touch-up here and there. The blades will be left 'clean', without any traces of weathering or chipping, as the Mk.XIV used a Dowty Rotol unit, with wooden 'Jablo' blades. These had a protective 'skin', in the form of a thin rubber membrane, to prevent moisture attacking the blades, which could not only cause imbalance, but, at worst, could possibly cause de-lamination - a disasterous situation.
PIC 5 shows the undercart assembled, with the wheels set at the correct angle on their off-centre axle holes. These will be fitted when the model is almost completed.
The next stage is to spray the clear coat, ready for decalling, then remove the masking from the open starboard gun bay and add the cannon, with some scratch-built fittings, firing hoses and gun heating ducts etc, along with the ammunition belt and feed to the Belt Feed Mecahanism, the large cylindrical object seen on the top of the cannon's receiver, which neccessitated the fitting of the upper wing blisters.
Thanks again for your interest.
Terry.
