The Subject chosen for this GB is the Mitsubishi G4M1 RIKKO 'Betty' Japanese Bomber.

The Aircraft will be an early version BETTY still carrying the Brown and Green Camouflage pattern, before the Green alone, became standard.

The candidate will be F-348 of the 4th Kokutai based at Rabaul New Britain, and it's final mission on 20th February 1942.

On this day F-348 was commanded by Hikotaicho Lt. Cdr. Takuzo Ito as Senior Observer during the disastrous attack on the Carrier USS Lexington when 15 of the 17 Betty's failed to return from the mission.

F-348's demise has been immortalised in a famous photo sequence of it's last moments, taken from the Lexington, during it's attempted suicide dive on the carrier.

This aircraft had earlier been fatally damaged by Lt. Edward 'Butch' O'Hare who had blown the Port engine Nacelle clean off during it's bomb run.

The pilot, Warrant Officer Chuzo Watanabe, managed to maintain some control of his aircraft during it's final dive and pointed it towards the Large Aircraft Carrier, heavily damaged and limping along on it's one engine, it was further shredded by anti-aircraft fire and crashed into the sea on the port bow ahead of Lexington.
