8.8 Earthquake strikes Chile

Last I heard, the death toll was 78, but I am sure that will rise today as the sun rises and they start to dig out. 8.8 is huge. I also heard about a 6.9 near Okinawa as well. Whole lotta shakin' goin' on.

Yea, it wasn't a huge one but we had a 2.8 earthquake over here....last week first I have ever felt. It was kinda scary although it wasn't really that bad.

I have been through a few 6+, a bunch of 5s and countless 4s and below. You learn to live with it in California. The Northridge quake of 1994 was the worse one I have been through. I remember screaming at one point and then thinking "Holy crap, I can't even hear myself screaming". It was really loud and unbelievable.

Has anyone noted the greater frequency of big quakes recently and their seemingly random distribution around the globe?

When I was a kid, I thought earthquakes were something that happened to Japan and San Francisco, you didn't really hear about them anywhere else

Tsunami has been generated. Been moving through the Pacific at speeds of a jet liner. Expected to hit Hawaii an other parts of the pacific within 24 hours.

There really isn't a statistical increase in seismic activity. You have to look at the occurrences on a decade/century timescale. And the frequency of large quakes along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is actually significant over a 2 - 3 year period.

This looks to be the 4th earthquake of this magnitude for this area, since records have been kept.

Hawaii has now started the sirens and evacuations. A tsunami with a wave of 15 feet is expected to hit Hawaii in less than 5 hours.

Acapulco, Mexico is expected to get hit within the next 10 min.

Guarantee you that Pearl Harbor is empty of everything, including tugs, right now. 15' wall of water...that's a huge wave, with a LOT of force behind it! Hope everyone's smart and gets the heck outta the area...bet there's at least one surfer who tries it, though.

Pearl Harbor is not much at risk for the tsunami due to its restricted (geologically speaking) assess to/from the sea.

Restricted access or not, there's a standing order for all ships in port, that are physically capable, to put out to sea in event of hurricane or tsunami, whether they have a full crew compliment on board or not. Tsunamis and hurricanes don't care much about the low-lands between the open ocean and the port.

Looks like Hawaii was spared. The largest wave was only 6 feet. The authorities there had 16 hours to evacuate everyone. No fatalities, injuries or damage has been reported.
