You're more than welcome, guys.

Wellllll....I think it's high time that I show you lot some pics from Greenland and the town where I was born. :)

Put short: It was the holiday of a lifetime! :D

The slightly longer version comes here... ;)

I flew from Copenhagen to Greenland (Kangerlussuaq) on the 7th of august, and we had to fly with a spanish 757, since Air Greenland's own "Norsaq" was undergoing maintenance.
4 hours trapped in a sardine can with wings is a bit much for someone who is a) chain smoker, b) afraid of flying, and c) afraid of heights, but I managed.
Talking a lot with my fellow passengers and doing yoga breathing exercises helped a lot, reminding myself that nobody had ever been stuck up there, so what was there to worry about? Keeping an eye on the cabin personnel worked great too, because...well, if they were calm, I guessed that there were nothing to worry about. Bwahahah. :D

Anyway, the trip went well despite nicotine abstinences, add only 2 hours of sleep and being nervous as hell about everything, and then you gotta add the fact that I WAS after all excited like mad about going to Greenland - now there's a recipe for my faux mohawk actually NOT being hair, but nerves! :D

So...here's the 757 in Kangerlussuaq:

And yours truly in the middle, together with two very sweet swedish ladies, who had brought their own mascot called Björne Björnsson, as I had brought mine: My rubber duck Biker Bill. (Pun intended...)

After an hour I had to catch my flight to Ilulissat/Jakobshavn, this time it was a DASH-7:

The flight went well except for the landing, which felt like...well, it was rough, but at least everybody walked away from it in one piece, so that was alright. :D
I was picked up by the hotel's driver and taken to the hotel where I was supposed to stay overnight before continuing on to Upernavik the next day.
After I had tossed my suitcases into the hotel room, I grabbed my camera and went for a walk.
I wanted to see the museum that used to be the childhood home of one of my heroes, polar explorer Knud Rasmussen.
The museum was open, so I enjoyed the place and went for a walk afterwards in the nice sunshine.
There were almost no wind that day, and the sun was shining, so the temperature had reached a scorching 11 C. Brrrr! :D
You have got to remember that I had left Copenhagen that same day, and we had like 28 C - and arriving from tropical heat temps to winter was....different. :D

Anyway, Jakobshavn was totally stunning and the icy fiord was wonderful.
One thing I did notice right away, was that the ice smelled fresh (- it's pure clean freshwater and the best drinking water you can get in the arctic), and because it was incredibly quiet up there, you could hear the millions of little air bubbles burst as the ice melted in the sunshine - it was fantastic!

"Ice in the fiord? Again? Okay. I need to go sailing anyway." And so he did. :D You could hear the ice rub against the sides of the boat. o_O

Part of the town with the typical greenlandic houses.

Very greenlandic traffic sign: Dogsleds crossing. :)

A boy's old dog sled, recycled as a flower decoration:

The water in the fiord was so clean, it was incredible.

Needless to say, I went to bed early that day, and I slept like a baby.
After breakfast the next day, I packed my stuff and checked out from the hotel. I spent a couple of hours outside on the terrace while passing time until I was taken to the airport again, I had to catch the flight to Upernavik at 1 in the afternoon.
And what a flight it was!
I was still big time nervous, but the sweet steward and the pilots really helped me a lot.
And the pilots surprised the hell out of me by offering me to spend the time during approach and landing in Upernavik, in the cockpit. :D
The steward had told them what I had told him; that it was my first ever visit in Greenland since I was born, and so they gave me that wonderful gift.
Do I need to tell you guys that I love them all for it, and that I thanked them like mad afterwards? ;)

Iceberg, Jakobshavn.

Umanaq. Take a close look at the right tip of the island, you can just barely see the houses.

Coming in for landing, with the city where I was born, to the left. Sorry, starboard. :D

And so I had finally arrived at Upernavik, and I was one big nervous vreck. A happy, relieved wreck, but a nervous wreck nonetheless. :D
The guest house owners, Gina and John, picked me up at the airport and drove me to the house where I was going to stay.
And when you're hauling a 20 kg (40 pound) suitcase, an 8 kg (16 pound) carry-on and a handbag, you do tend to blanch a bit at the sight of the house where you're going to stay. Heheheheheh!

But I didn't have to worry: Gina (- who is a tiny philippine lady) grabbed my suitcase and hauled it all the way up to the house.
Her husband John had a very bad back, so he couldn't lift it. Or so he said. :p
We talked for about an hour or so, Gina told me about a lot of practical things, and then she left.
I went to the supermarket to do some grocery shopping, and when that was done, I made dinner and relaxed.
The whole place was amazing.

A local traffic jam. ;)

Evening.
Because the season with midnight sun had just ended on Aug. 6th, this was as far below the horizon that the sun went at night - so no northern lights for me.
It was still totally stunning nature, though.

Short break. To be continued. ;)
