Thanks Andy and all for the hints and commits. I used a metal probe, it's a bit bigger then a needle and that may help. I also had too large of a bit in the pin vice to start with. I'll try the sewing needle as I try to clean it up.
 
A long time back I found a set of Warbird decals that gave you the blue nose for the 352 FG. I tried them once and was not totally happy with the results, the color is ok for the early noses, but by September 1944 they group went to a darker color blue. Most call for a Prussian blue for the latter. These match Testors 1110 from the 1/4 oz bottles. Any way they give you four noses and the basic markings for "Princess Elizabeth" P-51D 2106449 in the sheet. I took one and cut it out and used it to stencil my Mustang nose so I can paint the nose in the Royal Prussian blue. Maj Preddys first two planes would have had the lighter blue.

Gotta love this Tamiya vinyl tape.

Ok so having to use what I already have so I used the Testors 1111 Dark blue and I think it comes pretty close to what I want.

 
Thanks Andy, I am thinking that it is easer to mask the blue rather then the metal. Maybe I'm wrong, but that was my thinking.
 
Either way would work, depending on the type of paint. You could have sprayed the whole nose blue, then mask the pattern and spray the aluminum....or spray the whole thing aluminum, then mask as you have done and paint the blue. The way you've done it, once you peel the tape off, you have to mask the other side and paint the aluminum, so you're masking twice.
 
Pulled the mask of now to reverse mask and need to mask the wings to paint them silver and then the NMF for the rest of the fuselage.

 
I just masked off the nose using the 5mm Tamiya vinyl tape. I also we and did so resurch on the dope paint for the wings and found this diagram.
