**** DONE: GB-49 1:48 XP-51 - Favourite A/C of WWII

Its been a while since I've posted anything on this build because I hadn't done anything on it until this past weekend. This kit really ticked me off and I had to step away from it.
I had finished all the sanding and polishing and made up the landing lights (first picture}, and went to put on the portion of the landing gear cover that goes over the tire when retracted as on the early Mustangs this stayed closed while on the ground as opposed to the later models where the hydraulic pressure bead off and they opened up. Well I went looking for them and could not find them. I looked every where but no luck. I looked in the instructions and it did not show them in either the assembly or the sprue map. This is ICM's Mustang Mk.II kit. I also have ICM'sP-51A kit so I looked there and that kit had them. They were on a second spue "E" that all the other parts were for Packard Mustangs except the said wheel covers, so BEWHARE: if you buy the ICM Mustang Mk.II kit, you will not get the inner wheel covers.
I got back to it this weekend and used the P-51A parts as a pattern to make up a new set and after a lot of trimming and fitting managed to get a reasonable fit (picture 2) so now I can finally join the wings to the fuselage.

 
Thanks guys. I was a little worried about the warp those doors have in them but the card stock I used was pretty thin and conformed pretty well.
I'm ready to hit it again, I just need some spare time now.

Got the wings and the radiator scoop on and everything filed sanded and polished, and it was a royal pain in the a$$.
I've built limited run kits that didn't give me half as much trouble as this one. I actually had the wing glued on at one point and had to rip it off and start over. I lost count of the hours of filling, filing, sanding and re-scribing to get the scoop and wing right and just now I test fitted the horizontal stabilizers. They fit nice and tight with not much of a seam. Only problem, is that one is level while the other is tilted up at about 5 degrees.
I am going to half to be really despite to build a P-51A to start that other ICM kit in the stash.
Oh, and I've managed to misplace the decals I managed to coble together for this.
Right now I just can't wait to finish it and start in on the Zombie build.

 
You're making good progress on this. It would have probabably been easier to use an Accurate miniatures P51A kit. ICM sounds like it has way too many problems.

Keep at it Glenn, I'm sure it'll be worth the effort.
I've built a couple of the iCM P-51B kits, without much in the way of problems, so I hope the ICM P-51A I'm going to do a a Mustang Mk1 doesn't give too many problems !!!
The more recent ICM kits are a world apart from their earlier releases, and are really well engineered and a joy to build.
