A note I'm sure you know that Bill but there were covers of the slots between the wing trailing edges and the flaps while being retracted. When the flaps were lowered down the covers were moved inside the gaps toward the trailing edge.

Thinking about those Gap Seals.
In the late 80's I used to ground crew a couple of parachute teams.
One of the planes they used most often at air shows and drop ins was a twin, Baron.
They owner of the plane used his "drop" money to improve his planes performance.
One of them were Flap Gap Seals!!!! Go figure they were used on WW2 aircraft.
He was happy as a clam with the improvement in handling. Improves air flow under the wing!?
