German Francke, Karl Ogefr Bomber pilot Ju 88, Ju 177V-1 Werk # 00001 "CB + RP" (11/39)
EK 1 & 2
Bomber Operational Clasp He flew one of the four Ju 88s making the first operational flight of WWII,. Attacked the British carrier "Ark Royal" on Sept. 26, 1939 as an Ogefr.. Göring credited Francke with hitting the carrier, although he did not, promoted him to Lt., and awarded him with the Iron Cross 1st & 2nd Class. He later became Director of Testing at Rechlin.

GERMANY'S LUCKIEST AIRMAN!
One of the luckiest men in Germany must surely be former Lance-Corporal Francke, who has been promoted Lieutenant and awarded the Iron Cross (First and Second Classes) for something he hasn't done!
Honours have been heaped on Francke for his "successful bomb attack on a British aircraft-carrier"
The only British aircraft-carrier which has suffered as the result of enemy action is the "Courageous", and she was sunk by a submarine.

American Second Lieutenant Norman K Lovingfoss 398th Bomb Group

Navigator Second Lt. Norman K. Lovingfoss was the original navigator Albert M. Petska Crew 602nd Squadron but was Killed in Action on 10 Nov 1944 10-11-1944 Friday .

He entered England 17-10-1943 Sunday

Breakfast 0600
Briefing 0700
Time 6:40
Carried 38 – 100 lb G.P's
Alt. 26,000'

Flak was intense for 4 minutes and very acc. 8 bursts at a time instead of the usual 4 bursts at a time. Navigator killed, don't know yet which one. Have 147 combat hours now. Lost 27 bombers, 7 fighters.
The navigator who Baker refers to was Norman K. Lovingfoss of the 602nd SQ. He was hit by Flak and died before his crew could return to base.
There were no more entries after November 10, 1944. The 398th did not fly from 10 November 1944 until 21 November. On the next 398th mission, Lt. Baker was killed in action on November 25, 1944 returning from Merseburg, Germany.

To get a feel for how bad it was read the dairy of Baker in #3
