3./JG3 Messerschmitt Bf109E-1. Crashed in the Channel during escort sortie over Margate and combat with RAF fighters. FF Fw Georg Hofelich killed. Aircraft 100% write-off.
The body of Georg Hofelich was washed ashore at Escalles on August 29.
9./KG3 Dornier Do17Z-2 (1187). Crashed attempting belly-landing near St Inglevert badly damaged by AA fire and fighters during sortie to attack Gravesend airfield 8.15 a.m. HS Lt Klaus Mai (of Lw.Kr.Ber.Komp. 3) killed, FF Uffz Hans Riedel broke both legs, BO Gefr Karl Kindler badly wounded hand - both admitted to hospital, BF Obergefr Hans Steinadler slightly wounded. Aircraft 5K+MT 100% write-off.

Mai was a reporter with the Luftwaffe War Reporting Kompanie 3. HS = Heckschutz = rear gunner. Luftwaffe war reporters were given the lowest officer rank, Leutnant, while posted to an operational unit, and wrote articles about what it was like operating with a front-line unit. Not all survived, as can be seen.
