Leaving Vietnam unfortunately but actually going back in time a little to Cambodia which I visited between Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An. Starting with the Temples of Angkor...

It always amazes me a little to see abandoned places like that, especially on such a scale. In modern terms it would be equivalent to abandoning London or New York. I read awhile back that they think the reason for abandoning Angkor had mostly to do with destructive farming techniques that made it impossible to sustain the population over time. But still to just more or less up and walk away from that amount of effort!
