That is pretty wild. Looks like the whole fight happened and everyone just kept going. Trail fell into disuse after that, at least that part of it, and thing stayed as they were. Very unusual.

Hope that they got the recovery teams and investigators in there before making this find public. You know the scavengers and souvenir hunters are going to be swarming...
 
From what little I've read about the Kokoda Trail, it was truly an awful place to fight a war. Hats off to this dedicated researcher who made the discovery, and for having the decency to inform Aussie and Japanese authorities first. I hope the entire area is protected so that archeologists can piece together what happened, find all the human remains, identify as many as possible, and give all a respectful burial. May they all find peace at last!
 
A good book on it is "The Ghost Division". About the US Division that fought at Buna. Before it did so, they sent a scouting party to see if they could cut a trail across NG and attack the Japanese in the rear. They got about half way before realizing it was hopeless. Great story, great read.
