Airframes, I will say again, that was not just his solo work. And I don't wish to fool anyone. As I said, he glued, sanded, painted by brush, and provided the detail scribe lines by hand. What he didn't do is accomplish this without my direct supervision and I masked the lines for him. And as I noted the decals were past their prime so I had to put them on otherwise they totally disentegrated into pieces the size of a pencil point. [Thanks again for the help here, Wayne]
Now for the bragging, even at 9 he has an artist's hand. The brushing is phenomonal for a 9yo (8yo at the time he turned 9 on Oct 12). His abilities are so far beyong mine when I was his age in every area, that I can't imagine what he will be doing when older.

Hey Muller, I have a question for your great Lavochkin. What did you use for the black in the panel lines. Pastels? And how did you do that? It looks beautiful!

Great stuff Matt. I have a similar thing with my youngest daughter, who is now just turned 15. Her artwork, since the age of 4, has been exceptional, and now, she's doing some stunning Manga art, which a publisher is interested in. It's great when your offspring have such advanced talents.

I was up in my parents loft recently and found a box of some builds I did as a kid, they were rubbish compared to that RA-5c. 
The panel lines on the La-7 were done with pastels. Scrape the pastels (I used dark browns and black) with a blade into a container. They scrape into dust. Then add a couple of drops of washing detergent and water. Paint the entire plane with this mix, and when its dry wipe it off with a damp piece of kitchen paper. The pastel wash remains in the panel-lines.
**Give the whole plane a coat of Klear/Future before doing this, if you don't it will darken the paint (if it's a matt paint).
I normally give it the pastel wash after the decals are on, but I got a bit ahead of myself with the La-7 and gave it a panel wash before the decals went on.
I discovered another way of weathering with panel wash by mistake a while ago. I painted a A6M5 zero's topside green, added the decals, then decided to really weather it with a lot of metal showing thru. I went along the panel lines with a sponge dipped in silver enamel. I then gave it a coat of Klear/Future, and gave it a panel wash. I wasn't happy with the paint chipping, it was WAY over the top. So i used the sponge again with some of the green paint on it and went over the chipping I had done to tone it down a bit. I also went over the hinomaru's with a bit of red paint on the sponge. When that was dry I gave it a pastel wash, forgetting I hadn't given it a coat of Klear 1st and it darkened the green and red paint I'd applied with the sponge. But I think the mistake I made actually worked!

Certainly looks good to me. Don't know much about Japanese A/C, but I've seen many pics of them with hard weathering, and that looks just like them!

I'm a little gunshy on the pastels. Klear/Future (that's the floor polish right?) doesn't leave the flat paint glossy? I would have thought it would. You just brush it on? With so many brush coats (paint, Klear/Future, pastels, etc) I would think that brush strokes might become an issue.

One coat of Klear lightly brushed on should do it, it isn't glossy with one coat, and it's enough to protect your paint from absorbing the pastels and changing colour. The pastel wash is wiped off, so you're only leaving it in the panel lines. I never have any trouble with brushstrokes.

Muller's right, Matt. Future/Klear will only be semi-matt with one coat, and it's so thin that, if brushed-out smoothly, there won't be any brush marks. If you want a good, deep, gloss finish at some time, two or three coats of Future give a really deep gloss.

Rochie, in our good old country, you can get it from Tesco's or any shop that sells household stuff. It's called 'Johnsons Klear', and comes in a 500ml, 10 inch tall bottle, with a blue cap, and a red and blue label. It should last you about 10 years! You'll find it with all the polishes and other womens stuff!
