I'm a fan of black basing - I've used it extensively for various elements of my current Corsair build over on the group build forum. It not only lets you build subtle tonal variability into camo, but also helps build shadows and highlights in other structural elements. For a variety of reasons, I used a "half way house" method for the Corsair airframe which combines traditional pre-shading of panel and rivet lines with interspersed heavy black mottling.
