Typically they're 1 mile long.

Here in OC a couple miles from my home, we have the BNSF mainline.

We get lots and lots (70 to 80 per day) of container trains, piggy back's (Semi trailers on special flat cars), ethanol tankers, automobile carriers and hoppers.

Ive heard 2 miles being planned for the US, but I don't think its going to be implemented where there are curves or grades exceeding a certain percentage (which excludes all of the western states).

When I'm stopped at crossings, I sometimes count the cars and calculate lengths. I dont think its ever exceeded 1 mile.
 
To be honest Sys...I love ALL the American railroads when it comes to the steam era and early diesels. After that I become more picky as you can see with the railroald heralds that I posted, those are that ones that I'm really interested in up until 1976 when some of them disappeared in affore mentioned CONRAIL. My dad has a slight interest in US Railroads too, not as much as he used to though, his favorite was MONON. Three of my best friends back in Sweden are sucker for US railroads as well, Lennart: D&RGW, Michael: Erie Lackawanna and Thomas UP and AT&SF...

Milwaukee Road, Great Northern, Northern Pacific and Southern Pacific are my BIG favorites since I'm huge sucker of mountain railroading....

AND RIO GRANDE IS a rather special railroad I have to admit....

Funny your dad is a fan of the MONON. Thats a long gone small railroad!!

I love the E-L. The paint Gray paint schemes were quite an eye pleaser.

Lucky .... the suburb I grew up in Minneapolis had a twin track GN main line, a twin track CNW (ex M&SL) main line, a twin CMSP&P main line and a small local rail line (The MN&S)

This Pic is of an ex DRG used by a leasing company. I took it in the desert on the way to Vegas. The crossing grade to the right is the old famous route 66.

Great pics mate! Hmmm....that name, Route 66, brings thoughts to you, doesn't it...? Would love to be able to drive the whole lenght of Route 66 one day, with books, maps and old pics....that would be a blast. Of course you do the trip in one of those old classic 50's cars with matching music..


Does ANY road ANYWHERE play with your mind the same way as the Americas Highway does?

Having a railroad comes natural to me, my dad has worked for the Swedish State Railway since '62, his father before him did as well and his cousin, who I've mentioned before moved to Vancouver in B.C in 1924, started out working as a logger in the woods there, to later work for a railroad, don't which one though...CN, CP or BCR...

Some Great Northern for you Sys...













I also am partial to logging and narrow gauge railroading too....













This is another thing close to my heart (sorry for the off topic Sys..)...
Classic drive inns and gas stations..

Cheers, our trains vary in length, heading East (from Adelaide) they can be up to 1500m long compared to 1800m heading West. Our trains heading West are also double stacked (container on top of another) in Adelaide.
