Lucky, I have a book entitled THE COMP'NY (The story of the Surry, Sussex Southampton Railway and the Surry Lumber Company). Compiled by H. Temple Crittenden, from September 1930 to August 1966. McClain printing company, Parsons West Virginia 26287. Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 67-21865. If you can find a copy of this it is a very good read. Some of the old rail beds were still visible on the farm where I grew up and the warf or docks were across the James River from Jamestown. I would offer to send the book to you to read but my father would probably have me shot. Hopefully the info can help you locate a copy.

I've got two logging books so far, Railroads in the Woods by John T. Labbe and Vernon Goe... and Logging by Rail, The British Columbia Story by Robert D. Turner

This is my small railroad library here in Glasgow, got alot more back in Sweden with my parents and one of my friends...including Pullman Standard Library 15 volumes, miss only the number 4, which is the volume for Pennsylvania Railroad....

Got back from Roanoke about 5pm. Had a lot of fun at the museum. Not a big crowd, kinda empty actually which means not a lot of interference. Kinda bushed though. The sun gave me H$(( today. I fought it as best I could, oh well.

































 
Outstanding pics mate! D*mn shame that they're not running the A and the J anymore! Thinking back to the when the Roanoke Shops were still up, some complex and how clean their roundhouses etc were....
Not to mention how well thought the design were of the big three, easy to grease and other maintenance.

The truck in the last pic, is it a Mack?

Great shots Lucky, thanks for posting. I did get to ride the 611 when I was 4 years old. We rode from Waverly, VA. to Wakefield, VA. then chased it to Ivor where it was suppose to stop but did not. I can honestly say it ran better than 80 mph.
