Good Lord man, how did you manage to survive that place?

I mean the stress of all the azure waters and the absense of noise...those annoying palm trees swaying in the wind...probably even assaulted with exotic drinks sporting umbrellas...it's a miracle you're still with us!!

Thought I should re-kindle this thread after a bit of a lay off. As some of you will know we had a quick trip to Bali early last month, a nice place to relax and enjoy the warmth of the people. Needless to say I took a few pictures and as it so happens, there was also a royal funeral being arranged while we were up in Ubud. The Balinese still have the tradition of a burning pyre which is prohibitively expensive for the average family not only in arranging a pyre but also in the ceremonies and feasting that proceed and follow the burning. So when there is a royal funeral the opportunity is taken by many families, to exhume loved ones and in joint ceremonies, cremate them on smaller pyre in the days prior to the Royal funeral.

Here we have the Royal Bull which will be part of the procession and burnt on the day. Smaller versions of these and others representing tigers were scattered round the town ready for burning on the main funeral day.

The making of this huge pyre was in full swing right in the centre of the town and the community spirit in getting it built was inspirational. Families came from all over the island to muck in.

This group had obviously just joined up as there was much hugging and hand shaking, then standing together for the picture taking.

This was one of many memorial signs around the town centre, we could not find out if they were signs in memory those who had passed on and were being cremated of just advertising. My guess was for the former.

And here we have some of the food being prepared. Suckling pig and duck on stick.

The striking thing about all this preparation is that though a solemn occasion, everybody was having fun.

when were you in my house?, because I avisastes? jajajajajajaja.
just kidding.

good pics and a beautiful place for more than just relax, when I marry the honeymoon has to be something like ......, to Thailand and Vietnam

Just a bit more on the recent Bali trip. It has to be the motorbike kingdom, everyone seems to own one and it's obviously the best mode of transport as traffic congestion is a major problem there.

Ubud town is kind of built up on the banks and hilltops of quite a deep river that meanders it's way through the town. These general pics show, though not so clearly the town sitting on the hillside rising up from the ravine. The last one is the Two Bridges restraint that we dined at a couple of night later.

This was the street leading up to our villa and one of the many front doors leading to peoples family homes.

Following on from the general main street views, this next on is the road leading up to our villa. I say road but if two vehicles meet, someone has to back up and find a passing gap.

This little chap guards the bridge over a deep ravine on the way to the villa. It was about a 20 minute walk from the main street to the villa, the last bit being up a bit of a steep bit of hill.

This next set of pictures show the villa and it's surrounds. First pic is the reception building, then the villas which were very private and all facing out looking over the rice fields and the shower though still private was out the back in the open air. There was also a little restaurant at the villas which served up some of the best Italian food we have ever had, and that includes in Italy. Not surprisingly the owner was Italian married to an islander.
