I just found out tonight that it's nearing the end of a long flight for the grandfather of my girlfriend (of 4 years). He flew P-47s in the Pacific with the 7th Air Force before switching to transport.

He's 94 now and I've always found him to be a real gentleman, friendly and engaging. I hope he has more time left, but I am deeply saddened by the news.

I didn't learn he was a fighter pilot until one thanksgiving I was talking to him and made a reference in conversation to the P-47. He said, "I flew a P-47 during the war." and I just stopped with my mouth open for a second, then said, "Then why am I still talking?"

edit: remembered my exact choice of words.

It does go to show how few of those guys are still with us. It's going to be the end of a great era.

My best wishes Clay. Seems like hes been on the front line his whole life being a pilot in war and living to 94. Hopefully many good years ahead :)
