Hi everyone,

This, by way of explanation as to why I dropped off the forum recently. Since I last posted, I have been to the other side of the globe. My father-in-law (92) was taken seriously ill and, first my wife, and then the rest of our family travelled to New Zealand, thinking it would be our last opportunity to see him alive. However, these Kiwis are tough characters and his condition stabilized sufficiently for us to feel comfortable enough to return home, leaving him well cared for by his NZ family, with medical support. On writing, he is still hanging in there and we hope that he will be for many years to come.

I'm back just over two weeks now and have just started relooking at my builds.
I had to abandon the group build but will finish that at some later stage, and have just restarted work on the Lanc. It took a little while to pick up the threads from where I left off and have just started to make progress of fitting out the bomb aimer's position.

Here's some shots of the small amount of progress I've made since I returned. The first task was to complete the bulkhead wall. The first two shots are the refs I was working to for that section.

This one shows the oil tank/step, the pump and parachute.

This one, taken upwards through the open escape hatch shows the camera assembly as well.

My first task was to attach the metal skins to the bulkhead. The oil tank is just dry fitted for position.

Next step was to install the partial floor to the nose section, delineating the escape hatch. The instructions would have me add this after installing the equipment on the back wall. However, I felt that it would be more difficult to fit after equipment was installed, so I ignored the instructions.

Again, the instructions suggest the equipment should be installed from starboard to port, with the step first and the camera last. The pump was not included in this line up but, as I had a spare pump from a duplicate issue, I decided to include it.
Careful dry–fitting showed that the camera, to be correctly positioned, needed to go in first. Then the 'chute and pump. These next two photos show first the three items in position and then a shot through the nose ring showing the tank/step added, adjusted to fit. then a very wide angle shot, through the nose ring showing all four pieces in position.

I then test fitted and positioned the safety rail, and that's what I've done to date.

Next, I was trying to get other angles on the assembly. First, through the nose turret ring and then through the escape hatch.

That's it for now. My next project is to tackle the port side consoles and I hope to get back to making more regular posts. Thanks for your patience,

Gerry

To Night Fighter Nut: I hope to leave cutaways on the starboard side, showing the interior details.

Good to see you back Gerry and it's great to hear your father in law decided to stick around after all. Kudos to him!

Very much looking forward to seeing your fine work resume and you certainly have not disappointed with this latest update. Just to clear up something in my mind, that camera faces back into the bomb bay, correct? My understanding is that pics were taken of the bomb strikes through the open bomb doors, necessitating level flight after bomb release until the bombs impacted.

Thanks Wurger Andy. It's good to be back.

Andy, In the Mark I'm building, the camera pointed vertically down through the small circular fuselage window as seen here at the base of the red line leading from the 'Just Jane' illustration. Hope tht adds some clarification.

Yaayyy! Sounds great that your father in law decided to keep going for a good while longer! Excellent!

Great to see you back and per usual, fantastic work mate, just fantastic! :notworthy:

Good to hear your father in law is doing well Gerry.
Great work yet again, and some of the construction will help when I get around to correcting and building the Tamiya 1/48th scale kit.
BTW, that rectangular panel, above the glycol tank/step in your reference pic, is a hinged cover over the bomb bay 'peep hole', with the circular opening for a torch.
Andy, all Lancs had the F24 'strike' camera pointing down through the floor. Very early models had two positions, one vertical and one partly oblique, but this was changed to vertical only. Once the bomb load had been dropped, a photoflash was dropped from the flare chute, and the aircraft had to maintain a straight and level course for quite a few more seconds, possibly 30+, depending on altitude, wind etc, in order to get the required photo(s).

Awesome stuff, will it be ready to joint the BoB and Mynarski lancs in the summer?

Er.., not this summer, pbehn!

Thanks Jan, Gnomey, and David for your comments. And Terry thanks for the extra information on the F24 camera and fuselage hatch.

Thanks for the clarifications Terry and Gerry. I knew of the strike cameras being used but was unaware of the location and aiming direction. So now I know!

You just can't keep a good kiwi down :)

Really glad to hear of his recovery Gerry, and love the work you've done here...I too will be using your build as a reference for some future Lanc projects!

Still progressing the bomb aimer's position. Carrying on from my last posts, I next tackled the port nose section consoles.

First, the reference I worked from for this part.

Next a close up of the left of the bomb sight computer next to the F24 camera.

I started by installing the computer then building outwards from that. I'm finding it difficult to get good angles on this c/u work, as, if I get in close with a wide angle lens it can be too dark to see the detail and if I want to use flash, I have to get back far enough that the flash doesn't flare out the detail. This next one taken from medium distance.

This one shows all the port consoles in position with connecting wires added but the formers get in the way.

Next I started on the panels on the Starboard nose. Again a shot I used as reference.

Here is the detailed panel positioned, with cables beginning to be added.

And finally, from the rear the bomb aimer's position to date.

That's it for the moment. The next task is to install the bomb aimer's rest, then the bomb sight itself.

Cheers,

Gerry
