Thanks everyone. Here's an update of the pitifully little progress done on this build
Let's start with the fuselage seams which are now essentially done. The kit has the fence antenna molded in which looks kinda clunky so it was binned in favour of fabricating a scratch built unit later. This also made the seam sanding a lot easier. The seam in the second pic is pretty much done with panel lines rescribed and the holes for the antenna posts drilled out. The panel with the ejector chutes still needs a bit of work on the panel line scribing but I'll wait til the wings are glued on since more sanding will likely be required.
Similarly, the upper seams had been smoothed down and the panels scribed.
And now, we have the wheel wells. Ah yes....the wheel wells. The CMK wells are nicely detailed but are a bit of a b!tch to cut into the wing mold. There are two main pieces for each nacelle. First is the opening for the retracted wheel which needs to be accurately cut and fitted into position. I showed one of these earlier that went reasonably well. The next pic shows how it was treated inside the wing, with plenty of reinforcing strips and CA to hold it firmly in place.
The second piece is a vertical insert that's supposed to fill the gap left after sawing away the gear doors. This thing was very awkwardly shaped and required some tricky cutting and filing to make it fit. Multiple unsuccessful cuts and dry fits resulted and after breaking one of the resin parts in the process, I gave up on this and decided to fill the gap with plastic card instead as can be seen in the next pic.
Here's a shot of the resin piece placed in front of the plastic card filler. As you can see, the resin is a smaller diameter, leading one to think that it needs to fit inside the nacelle. However, the bit at the notch is at the same height as the surface of the inside of the well, so this needs to be slotted in resulting in very tricky cutting in a tight space.
This is the same shot without the resin piece. As you can see, I had to put a lot of filler back in after the amount of cutting and filing that was done.
Finally, the same piece after sanding , filling and a shot of primer. It's now starting to look like something and, after a bit more sanding and cleanup, I'll start adding some of the detail that is present on the discarded resin piece.
By the way, the CMK instructions were extremely poor for this area, offering no clue as to what's supposed to be done to make this part fit so if you ever tackle this build with similar parts, beware!
Thanks for looking in and for your patience!
