    Name: Charles
    Category: Judge - Non-Competing
    Scale: 1/24
    Manufacturer: Guillow's Model Airplane Co.
Model Type: Balsa/Tissue USAF O1-E "Bird Dog"
    Extras: None, OOB

    Cessna O-1E “Bird-Dog”

Originally designated the L-19, the Bird-Dog went into production in June of 1956 and was used during the Korean campaign as a liaison airplane by Army Field Forces to spot enemy troop concentrations, direct ground operations, carry ammo and evacuate wounded. Returned to production in 1962 and designated O-1E, the Bird-Dog gained fame anew as a “FAC” (Forward Air Controller) in the South Vietnam war where it was very effective in spotting and directing fire against the enemy Viet Cong forces. It also assisted in locating downed pilots and as an observer in the field.

Info on it’s wartime activities are extremely scarce, but I did find out 469 were lost in Vietnam,
    to various causes.

Thanks for the pic, Bill. My plans call for a paint scheme of "Light Gray" overall, with a Black anti-glare panel in front of the W/S. Think I will stay with this, as it's not too complicated, and I am not a good painter. Started construction this morning, and found a boo-boo in the plans. A part for the stabilizer, "S-1" is clearly labeled "L-5". Being the astute, experience modeller that I am, I saw thru this elaborate scheme to confuse me. I sent my spy at Guillow's a brief missive, informing them of the error.

Also found a couple of pic's online, but they're not real good.

    Pic's this evening.

I'm finished for today, made good progress. I have the fuselage ready for stringers, and the tail feathers constructed and ready for some light sanding, then clear dope to seal the wood pores. It's coming...

The plans are rather big, and printed on both sides, so I just Xerox the parts I need and work from that.

Good start Charles. I'll have a look through my old slides, as i think i have some shots of two that were (probably still are) based in the UK in the 1980s - one in the overall light grey, and one in O.D.

Nice start. Love this little plane, Charles, and I did not know that so many were lost during the Vietnam war.

Formed the main landing gear wire and the tail wheel wire and got them installed. Started adding the stringers, and have them finished, too. Next step is to install the rubber motor, then a bit of sanding and doping to seal the pores. Then it's time to cover the fuselage. I continue the march....
