Did the finish painting over the last two days starting with redoing the undersides with the with a lightened mix of of the above colour. I left a bit of the original colour to bleed through to achieve a worn look.

For the upper surfaces, I started with an even coat of Tamiya XF-51 Khaki Green and then went over it in a patchwork of very thin XF-49 Khaki. The ailerons just received a bit more of the Khaki.

After that, the painted-over original US insignia were cut and masked.

The scallops and painted-over insignia were done with the same colour, though they would have arguably been different. I decided to use XF-67 Nato Green for both to represent the Foliage Green (which I assume was used to cover the insignia) and the Medium Green scallops, both of which I wanted to tone down to represent a more sun-bleached shade.

Then it was time to pull the masks and here's the result:

Comments are welcome folks as this is my first attempt at this colour scheme and things can still be fixed. I'll let the paint cure for a bit before squirting on some Future.

Looking very good Andy.

You may want to consider painting the ailerons Medium green also. They were replaced/ recovered regularly though due to faults in the doping process at the Curtiss factory and tropical conditions. It's my understanding they were medium green from factory for this model.

Cheers

Peter

Thanks for the feedback guys and to you Peter for the tip on the ailerons. I actually based my decision on the below pics which seem to indicate no scallops or darker colour on the ailerons. The one with the arrow shows lighter ailerons with the scalloped camo so until I saw yours, this was the approach I used. Not sure what to do now!?!

Either way, since there is no photo to know for sure. They were replaced for a number of reason and there are many photos of RAAF kittyhawks with lighter coloured ailerons due to a transplant, fabric recover or faded out. You have a choice, I think, to show them as per factory or as in use.

Thanks guys. The next pics will show which road I took. If you don't see pics for a while, it will be because I haven't decided yet!
