The 2 reference Photo's of W-101 were taken sometime in 1939, after Soryu had returned to Japanese home waters , from earlier operations in the South China Sea.
Some references state the photo's were taken in November 1938, but other sources claim 1939 as W-101 along with W-102 and W-103, all Houkoku marked presentation aircraft, were all donated in early 1939.
