Yep, it is quite a large aircraft - as I found out once, many years ago, when I fell off the strut when re-fueling one at the local airshow !!
The culprit is shown below (poor scan from a 35mm slide) !!

Thanks friends. After giving the airbrush a good cleaning I mixed up a batch of RLM 79 and started the wave pattern. The mix ratio for the paint was close to XF59:7 + XF64:2 + XF7:1 to match Merrick's paint chip though it could have been lightened a touch with white. I chose not to as it would have meant an hour round trip to the LHS and the wave pattern would not have revealed much of a difference anyway.

I started with the horizontal stabs to get the hang of it since these could be easily repainted if I screwed up. As it turned out, things went swimmingly until I got to the vertical stab, at which point the paint was getting low in the cup and thicker. I stopped at this point as the spray pattern was getting unreliable.

Thanks guys. Plugging away small sessions at a time but not much more done yet so more later. I must say that even after leaving the wings off, trying to get the airbrush behind the landing gear supports is proving to be difficult.

Thanks Graham. I would suggest that it's possible with a quality 0.2mm tipped airbrush with proper pressure and ratios.

Oh believe me I have tried all sorts of things. I can get my airbrush to spray about a mm wide but no matter what ratio of paint to thinner or air pressure I can't get it to do it consistently enough to do squiggles. I bought a set of paint pens to try out. I've seen some people do some great work with them so I thought I would give them a go.
