Agree with you both, I have rarely used flash. But, 'open - flash' for night shots, especially if diffused and bounced, can give a rather pleasant effect of soft, overall, subdued lighting, but with the existing lights, for example, from the inside of a building, through a window, already burnt in. But, if it would work effectively with a digital SLR, I don't know. I'll have to find out!

You can get really nice effects with an external flash (one of those that you can clip on). Been looking to get one for a while but don't really have the cash to get one. Especially like the effects you can get by bouncing the flash of things. However without one I normally use natural light with a slightly higher ISO speed (normally use 400-800 and occasionally 1600) for natural light shots and every now and again use a low ISO (100/200) and a high exposure for certain shots.

You should be able to get the same effects with a DSLR as with a Film one Terry might just take some adjustments before you get used to it.

You could be right Hugh. I was just thinking that, as it's an electronically captured image, and not 'burned' onto a film emulsion, the same control might not be there. BTW, if you want an external flash, I've got a large 'hammer head' type Braun professional flash, that can be mounted on the camera base-plate, a tripod or hand held. The head swivells, has two different diffuser screens (head approx 5X3 inches) and it'll work on auto or selected manual settings. As it's fairly 'old news' by todays standard, the external, shoulder-slung re-chargeable battery pack is a bit large, and could possibly use a new battery, but it works very well indeed. (It should, it was top of the range of 'real' professional gear when new, and cost as much as the average SLR! )
Anyway, I never use it, and probably never will in future now, so, if you can make use of it, pay the postage and you can have it for free. (PS, I 'inherited' it when in the trade, so it didn't cost me a bean!)
E-mail me if interested.
Terry.

All kinds of things going on in the photo world for me. My photo has been chosen to be on the cover of the T-34 Association website and that a few others will be in the Mentor Monitor magazine, along with another article I wrote. The website is at:
Welcome To T-34 Association

I am working on my second book and am making some good progress now. I had a little crash issue with the book software yesterday that scared the crap out of me, but nothing was lost, thank god! Here is a sneak preview of the cover of my new book.

Looking good Eric. Great to hear things are going well for you in the photography business. I am just beginning to start to think about making some money off my photos (number of people have told my they are sellable). Just trying to find somewhere I can do this online. Terry has given me some links for aviation sites but most of my pictures are landscapes/animals so this isn't great for me. I'm just keeping looking though and it will likely just stay a hobby that I make some money off more than anything else.

You never know. Mine started out as a hobby as well. If you start up a website for your photos, you get more eyes on your photos and if you have something that catches someone's eye, it will get passed via e-mail in a viral marketing campaign that you won't believe. The article I wrote on the B-25 flight experience has recently been spread that way. It started with a few hundred hits in the first month of it that has grown exponentially. In November alone that one web page has had over 20,000 hits!

If you take good pictures (which you do) and can write something to go along with it, you will get noticed.

Yeah I have spread my photos around on various websites (this one, WW2 Talk, a couple of game forums and a sports one) and the link to my pictures (Flickr) is in my signature on all sites. Set up a Deviant Art are while back that I am now populating slowly with some of my best photos so view counts are increasing. I have been tempted to write an article for sometime and will try and get around to doing it over Christmas (I have a couple of ideas - mostly on my travels (thought about doing one for National Geographic but I doubt it would be published)...

You never know the answer until you ask. I have had a few times where I have asked a question, fully expecting the answer to be "no" and been pleasantly surprised that the answer was NOT what I expected. Of course, you will still get the expected answer, but it is nice to get the occasional unexpected yes. If I hadn't asked, I would still not have any shots of the P-51 Mustang air-to-air.

Great work on the book cover Eric; I like the way the title matches the shot, with all the flowing movement, and perfect lighting for the 'mood'. Hope it all goes well. BTW, have you got anywhere with those magazines?
Terry.

Some experiments while on a trip to Disneyland last week.

Thanks guys. Been working on posters today. They seem to be my hot seller right now, so I put 15 more designs together and got them over to my store. Here are a few examples of what I have so far. Anyone have something they think would be a good seller?
