I wonder if we could use the KI-43 as a basis for the KI-44's interior color scheme, since they were produced during the same time period?

If memory serves right, I believe that the KI-43 and KI-44 were even produced at the same factory: the Ota facility in the Gunma prefecture.

I should have remembered pictures of the Ki-44 relic in China.
It supports your theory is correct

As far as I have checked the Ki-44 relic pictures again, I find the gray-green around the cockpit and inside the wheel bay.
Other parts look bare metal from the beginning. So, attached image shows my understanding but it may be changed in the future.
