Nazis tried to train dogs to talk and tap out signals as part of war effort - mirror.co.uk

EVEN by Adolf Hitler’s standards the idea was totally barking…
The Nazi leader wanted to create a “woofed-waffe” of fearsome dogs to help him win the Second World War.
He aimed to train them to “speak” and tap out signals with their paws, according to research.
And they would be so highly developed they could even replace concentration camp guards.

Hitler set up a special training school after German animal psychologists insisted dogs could be almost as intelligent as humans.
They claimed one Airedale terrier called Rolf could relay messages using the alphabet and had also learnt a bit of poetry and speculated about religion.
A dachshund named Kurwenal was reportedly able to “speak” using different numbers of barks to spell out letters.
And a German pointer named Don, could apparently mimic a human voice to say “Hungry! Give me cakes!”

The bizarre scheme was uncovered by historian Dr Jan Bodenson, of Cardiff University. He found details of the plan in documents held at Berlin’s state library. Dr Bodenson explained: “It was all absolute baloney of course, but both Himmler and Hitler were taken in by it.

“Part of the Nazi philosophy was that there was a strong bond between humans and nature – they believed a good Nazi should be an animal friend. They seemed to think nothing of human rights, but lots about animal rights.”
Hitler had two German shepherds, Blondi and Bella. He famously killed Blondi moments before committing suicide in his bunker in 1945.

ROFL, RA. That was hilarious. The Germans had some great technology, but they also had some really harebrained ideas.

Agreed Eric. But then everyone had someone with a hair brained idea back then. We thought about an aircraft carrier made of ice (well fake ice) and the list can go on...

After extensive reconstructive surgery the Germans were able to graft human hands on one of the talking dogs, as this film clip demonstrates
