This is my 1/700 scale model of the USS South Dakota. It won Best Out-of-the-Box in last years Kalamazoo Plastic Scale Modelers contest. It is painted in the cammo she wore through out the war. She is most famous for the big gun battle with the IJN Kirishima near Guadalcanal. The USS South Dakota was hit several times. One hit knocked out her radar. Her Captain stopped firing fearing he would hit the USS Washington that was also in the battle. The crew of the USS Washington never liked anyone from the USS South Dakota after that. And many fights happened if the crews ever shared liberty at the same time after that.

49.3 cm to be exact I have the same kit in the waiting pile "rescued" from someone I know, he brought three kits last year then discovered a girl and to cut a long story short i have never seen so much dust on a model box before lol
 
I built this Mustang about 2001. I was given this kit. And being from Michigan, I loved the name!

The kit is a solid kit. Kit has a good amount of detail, but not so much as to overwhelm a beginning modeler. I did goof up one wing to fuselage seam. But I still like the end result.

It is built out of the box.

I brush painted the metal finish with Kylon Silver. The red and white trim was brushed on. The black stripes are model railroad decals. One trick whit the black stripes on landing gear. I placed the gear doors in place. I then decaled. Once the decals were dry, I cut the decal in the slot between the wing and gear door. That was fun! I paint detailed the engine and gun bay.

I like the kit. Some decade I will do another, but much better.

This is a simple kit for 1/48 scale. When I bought this kit second hand, it had a bunch of extra parts. The kit had the marking for a service F-16. I checked and with the two part nose gear door, it should be done in a prototype paint scheme. I have always liked the red, white, and blue scheme. But these are tough colors to do brush painting.

The white took many coats. The red wasn't too bad. The challenge was the blue stripe on the belly. It goes over ALL of the gear doors!!! I placed the doors in place and masked and hoped for the best. IT WORKED!

I did find a picture of this plane with both the Sidewinders and drop tanks on the wings. So at least for a moment on the ground, this was the way this very plane was loaded.
