After a time of absence for one reason or another, I now feel ready to bring this thread back into play. I'm still on the same holiday adventure in the late summer and autumn of 2013 and after a brief stop in Frankfurt we moved onto Lisbon for 2 or 3 days. Sadly this was where Hilary left her backpack in the back of a taxi containing passport, kindle and other useful items, but happily not credit cards or cash. So the first day was spent chasing a new passport and getting a police report. I have to say that both the Australian Embassy and Lisbon Police were excellent.

So here we are at the famous and well recognised Discovery Monument which also has a couple of other significant monuments in the same location.

This I believe is referred to as a "Wind Rose" and was part of a donation along with a mosaic world map depicting the main routs of Portuguese discovery.

There is also a replica Fairey III D. The aircraft was flown by Lieutenant Commander Sacadura Cabral with Cdr. Gago Coutinho (navigator) across the Atlantic from Portugal to Brazil in 1922, this was the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic.

Next we have the bridge over the Rio Tejo (Tagus River) estuary.

Also in the same location just a stone's throw from the Discovery Monument is the "Belem Tower" which was built during the age of discovery as part of the defensive system at the mouth of the Tagus River.

Shall I take a swim or just go and pinch someone's custard tart.
