Charles, you take some of the best pics of models that I've seen. Magazine worthy. And the Fairchild looks great! Did you sort out the sequin problem? I was going to suggest going to a local thrift store or Goodwill and rooting around.

Chris:
Yea.... the sequin problem has been solved. I went to a fabric store
and bought a yard of sequins for twenty-eight cents. I have no idea
how many are on it. I used them on the prop as washers, and also on
the wheels.

I still have to paint the Fairchild, but I've started a FW-190.

The Fairchild is cool Charles. Nice job.

Are those thread gussets I see in the "bones" pictures?? I very vaguely remember using thread for triangulation in the big rubber powered planes. Extreme light weight as I recall.

I kinda blew by this era as the "gas" motor was really taking off and I got into u-control stunt and combat.

Bentwings: Yea, the thread gussets is a technique I learned 60 years
ago. I don't guess it's done anymore.

I think I am going to stay with the rubber powered stuff. I thought about
R/C but just can't bring my mind to it. Guess you could say I'm in my comfort
zone. The next project is underway, a rubber powered FW-190.

It's in the thread MY FW-190, under Modeling.

BTW, you're not older than dirt....... I am ! When HE said, "Let there be
light".... I threw the switch.

......I threw the switch.

Haha. That's pretty good.

I remember the thread gussets. I use carbon fiber now. You can get CF tow. Carbon fiber thread if you will. The stuff is stronger than steel and lighter than aluminum. There a lots of really tough CF products now you might be interested in.
Try here for a starter; also the local hobby shop should have some.
Welcome to CST::CST-The Composites Store, Inc.

A typical built up spar using aircraft ply, spruce with CF caps and 100 inches long and 4 inches high in the middle will easily support me 240+#.

Bentwings: I will check out that URL. I have not done anything with
composites. FYI, I have 11 years on you..... Didn't get to work on the
FW-190, last night, had a meeting that ran late. (don't they always ?).

Good having you aboard....

The Fairchild actually got airborne last night. I put 100 turns on the prop,
set it on the floor of the garage and turned it loose. It leaped off the floor,
made a climbing left turn and plowed into the fridge, breaking the right
landing gear strut. After it's repaired, I think I will try a hand launch,
outside..... Letcha know...

Charles

I'll take the Fairchild over to the school Saturday. They have not cut the
grass in a couple weeks..... grass is about eight inches high. Should cushion
a bad landing....... I still have to find time to paint it.....

Charles

I meant to report of the (ill fated) flight of the Fairchild. I put 110 turns on
the rubber motor, did a hand launch into a very slight breeze. Again, the
climbing left turn, then it flipped onto it's back and augured in. The left
landing strut broke off, but has been repaired. As soon as it's painted it
will join the floatplane, hanging from the ceiling in the garage. It just
will not fly !
