You really need to expand this catagory.
Some of the greatest guitar work ever recorded was not performed in the Rock genre.
...and Gilmour had some better licks on earlier albums.
I'd take "Fat Ol' Sun" over anything from The Wall.
...also, "Stairway to Heaven"? Oh man...you've obviously never sat down and listened to the first two Zepplin albums, or Presence.

While I don't like their music, I tried to figure out "Hotel Californie" (The Eagles)today, especially the solo. It's defenitely one of the most melodic solo's I've played and belongs up there in the top. It's not technical, not many notes, but the timing is just right.

great song. I often find myself listening to it repeatedly!

Hey u lame ass fu*ks, what about Lynyrd Skynyrds Freebird??? Have we forgotton this piece of Roayalty????

WTF?

One of the few songs that I can Air Guitar to perfectly, all 3 guitar parts...
...and to that end, what about its progenitor, "Green Grass and High Tides"
Remember that one?
I had it on my computer until it crapped out.

What about the first Chicago album?
Terry Kath wailin' on "Poem 58" or "Liberation" or whatever that one song that was just straight guitar noise.
Pretty cool album.

Elvis

...I've since taken my pills and now remember that the "guitar noise" song on the "Chicago Transit Authority" album was called Free Form Guitar.

Incredible album.

Elvis

Thin Lizzy "cowboy song"
Eric Clapton "Key to the Highway"
Jimi "Little wing"
Santana "Europa"
VAn Halen"Ice Cream MAn"

SRV.. too many to mention

Is it a joke ? Nobody ever mentioned the name of Frank Zappa ?

So i did: Willie the pimp , on the "Hot rats" album (1969 or 1970),just tell

(sorry about the Japanese kids on the last one, but if you watch a few of their videos, you'll see they've got the songs pretty cold)

That should keep you occupied for a while.

Here's a thought for you "metal" guys... what is the thoughts behind those guitar solos in metal music? As you already know I like my 50's and 60's instrumental music, Dick Dale, The Ventures etc. etc...you try to paint a picture or tell a story with music, instrumental or with lyrics, right? Is the same thoughts put into the "your" solos as the rest of the track or are they just there to fill some space? To me they're just some "noice"...(sorry!)

I believe it has to do with the story of the song. It helps with the flow and the telling of the story. For instance a song about an epic battle will usually have the solo taking place at the hight of the battle.

It all varies from song to song.
