I think , Wayne meant a clear, gloss varnish. It's kind depends on the type of colours that were used for painting. If these were of the oil enamel type it should be the oil gloss coat. If these dopes were the acrylic ones it should be the acylic gloss varnish. General rule, the acrylic lacquer can be applied on the enamel coat but never conversely because it may cause damges to the paint layer. Each colour manufacturer offeres the clear gloss and matt varnishes.

To add to Wojtek's post, I used a gloss clear on the deck for the deck markings to adhere to correctly, once set and settled another gloss coat seals the decals and provides the same even finish so when the flat coat is done it provides a nice even finish. Sometimes if the decals are not gloss coated they will have a differing finish to the finish of the underlying original gloss coat.
Alll paints and clear coats in my case are acrylic.
