Original model is said invented by a Russian cook in Manchuria circa 1910.
Kai's looks closer to the original type.

Original Melon-pan has the biscuits layer on the pancake, sprinkled with sugar.
Variant ones have no biscuits layer but sweet bean paste in the pancake.
