thanks Glenn/Andy, interesting that the exhaust doesent seem to stain the fuselage only the upperwings and that in flight shot confirms my guess at where the landing gear covers would be dirtied !!!!
 
I wouldn't believe these modern shots. These I-16s are powered by a different engine with a little bit different exchaust system.

I have checked that red top, Karl. There is either red top or not in a few books that show the I-16 profile.
 
True Karl... however I have found a profile in a Russian book about I-16 , without the red top. But looking at the pic below I've got an impression it was there.
