Those are moneyshots, bro! I always love partly-cloudy evenings...they make the best sunsets. If you have one, try using a circular polarizer when you shoot sunsets. You'll probably want a tripod, too, since it cuts down on the light available (thus longer exposure times), but it really makes the blues in between the clouds pop. I left mine on a lens once by accident, and after getting the roll developed, I refuse to shoot a sunset without a polarizer on!

Thanks for all the compliments, guys...I'd much rather be grabbing tropical island/beach surf pix, but hey, we can't have it all, huh?

I agree about the filter, but unfortunately, I don't have any. One filter I really DO miss, was my IR on my old 35mm setup. One of these days I will get a nice set of filters, and maybe a lens that'll fill the gap between my 18-55 and my 70-300.

As it stands, 99% of all my shots are "what you see is what you get", meaning that I try and get my results as close to what was going on at the time. I know alot of folks like to post-edit thier shots...color enhancing, RGB filtering, etc...but I only edit out the $%#^ dust motes and occasional cropping...lmao

By the way, I like the late fall/winter/early spring skies for clouds/landscapes because the lower sun creates far better colors when it's rising/setting.

About a month ago, my friend Jim and I went flying, more on business than fun, the weather was rough, but we were trying to get aerial shots of our company's mountain-top repeater sites.

Anyway, thought I'd post a few pics up

Img 1 - Passing over the Sacramento River, Diestlehorst and Union Pacific Railroad bridges seen at center.
Img 2 - Shasta Dam and Lake to the North as we climb towards Southfork Mountain.
Img 3 - McCloud arm of Shasta Lake, our alt. was about 6,500 ft.
Img 4 - Hatchet Ridge wind farm on Hatchet Mountain. They placed 44 of these wind generators all around our repeater site which produce 101MW and stretch for over 6 miles along the ridge at an alt. of 5,466 ft.
Img 5 - And home! On final at Benton Field (O85)...the flight was real cold with alot of turbulance...but it's always good to be up!

Stunning shots Dave. That third shot looking down onto 'lake' ? with the sun glinting and the powerboat wash, is absolutely gorgeous !.

Where you able to have the windows open in the plane for those shots or are the photo plane windows unnaturally clean ?

Looking forward to some more shots from 'up there'

Like I said, it was brutally cold and turbulant up there, but it was good to be up! I've noticed that turbulance doesn't bother me at all when I'm up front, but get me in a bumpy commercial flight, and I get a little anxious...funny, huh?

Gary, that's the McCloud Arm of Shasta Lake and was taken at 6,500 feet (about 1.9km) plus I had the advantage of the noon-time winter sun being lower on the horizon...glad you like it, I was pleasantly surprised with the way it came out!

We were in a 172 with the windows open, that's why the shots were so clear. You can see the the difference when you look at the last shot, where we were on approach, and the windsheild has stuff on it

And here's a shot I took the other night. I was playing around with different settings and such, and this shot really caught my attention. The clouds are tinted orange from the lights here in town. If the moon had been up at the time I shot this, the clouds would have been white instead.

That shot did really come out nicely. Always struggled to get a nice long exposure shot that I am happy with, guess I need to go and experiment more.


I have been out and about taking a couple of shots recently but none that really stand out. Was also testing my new flash (Canon UK - The Speedlite 430EX II)
