Near the last place I lived, a redneck had installed ape hangers on his riding lawn mower. One of the funniest things I'd ever seen.

Yep, my uncle mentioned the same re Easy Rider Mike, he was a Harley and Triumph man for many years. He once had a beautiful 1947 HD knucklehead which took best of show at one of the Mildura rally's in the '90s and was featured in an Aussie biker mag. He personally preferred the Trumpy's to ride though.
 
Bill, "Ape-Hangers", per se, are not illegal BUT various states set "distance above seat" laws. So depending upon the state, your particular set of "Ape-Hangers" could be legal or illegal. Much like the various state by state helmut laws. Like raking the front wheel they compromise control never a good thing on a two-wheeler.
And as to my "bona-fides" I've received my first motorcycle at 8YO a Triumph Tiger Mountain Cub and have always had a bike or three since. And while I'm not one for posting pics of me, this am me with my Wing

Interesting. I've seen ape hangers around here often. 'Course doesn't mean they are legal. Look damn uncomfortable having grown up riding Kawasaki 440LTD, Kawasaki 750LTD, Suziki 400 straight Four and Yamaha 1100 Midnight Special... all cruisers. Even a cruiser for long periods is an upright chore in the wind. I can't imagine ape hangers for anything other than running up to the local drive thru.
 
Helmets were not law in '68 when I got my bike, but the dealer wouldn't let me leave without one. Gave it to me on credit. Good thing, four days later it had deep road rash on the back when I took my Femer dump!

Well just like Paul said, I am many things but pretty is not even in the top 1000. The big bike is a Honda 1500 Goldwing which I've had since 1994. Getting pretty close to 100,000miles. The smaller is a Kawi 750 Vulcan which is my real favorite I've had it since 1993. It runs like a scalded dog and handles like a dream. Bought the wing 'cause the boss wanted to ride along and the Vulcan really has little in the way of a passenger seat. Then a plain old tent was not good enough so along comes the Combi-camp trailer towed by the Wing

Matt, not only do they cause fatigue, but the vibrations along with the raised arm position shuts off the blood-flow to the arms and shoulder muscles. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper had severe problems duing the filming of Easy Rider. After one particularly long shoot Fonda could not lower his arms for several hours afterward.
Ape-hangers and forward-pegs make for the "Flying-squirrel" riding position, add the wind pressure on your full torso and you have a very tough position to maintain for any period of time not to mention the effect of 120dB straight pipes on hearing

EVO Harleys do vibrate. I have had 3, a Sportster Custom, Superglide and Electraglide. The thumb screw throttle lock was a god send. The EG had cruise control.
The SG had semi apes and forward controls. Great for posing but, killed my backside as all you body weight is on your arse.
Love Harleys for a pose.
Love Triumphs to ride further.

One bloody odd thing with the EG was in heavy rain the rain drops went up your nose behind the copious screens. Vortex I guess.
 
I used to have a 99 Valkyrie Tourer and an 01 GW,both with the flat 6's,one of the best engines ever made..
 
Forget the bikes. I had a 1969 BL LandRover and just took the top and doors off and folded the windshield down. Same difference only 4 wheels! :)
 
Actually Matt you'd be surprised at how well balanced it is and how easy to control. The hardest thing to get used to is that big fairing blocking any sight of the front wheel. With 1500cc you have the power to do just about anything. It will cruise at 80mph all day up hill and down, no wind blast to fight in fact there are vents to allow air into the "cockpit". In cool/cold weaher an airflow director routes the same air over the headers thus warm airflow from the vents. I've pushed it to 130mph and it was just as stable as at 60mph. Oh yea, there is a reverse gear for backing up and back-up lights too, an a built-in CB, turn lights, and cruise control
 
No $hit! :lol: Guess I never checked them out that closely. That Yamaha 1100 Midnight Special was more than enough bike for me. Very well balanced, but 800lbs or whatevertheeff that thing weighed was a real bear to muscle if the c-of-g got past a certain point. I don't like a bike that I can't right itself. Course on the 1500 there is so much gear hanging off the sides you probably don't need a kickstand... kinda like a weeble wobble.
