Last week, I tried out my new HD video cam by going out to the California desert and doing a day of train watching.

I know some of you will enjoy these. All of them were taken along Route 66 between Ludlow and Goffs. They obviously are in HD so don't be afraid to watch them in a large format.

I went back to Kermit with a friend who grew up in the area and I found out a few things. And I got a few photos to. The tunnel is the Clinch Mountain Tunnel and is 4,135 feet in lined length. And if you'll remember the photos that I posted awhile back of the concrete buildings, they did belong to the RR. the facility made sand from the sandstone on the mountain and from what I can tell, the one long building stored the explosives for the tunnel dig.

Nice pictures! I've also got a interest in diesel locos, my particular favourite being the BR Class 55 'Deltic.' Here's a video clip of one (I know this is a picture thread - apologies as I don't have any personal pictures to show you).

Heres five from the Union Pacific on their LA&SL line between Barstow and La Vegas. I took them last week.

The ballast train heading towards the right was later seen by me just as it cleared the Cima Hill summit and started down the grade towards the Kelso Depot.

This last one is of the ballast train passing in front of the Kelso Depot (which is the HQ and visitor center for the Mojave Desert Preserve. In a few hours, it will arrive at Barstow, California.

We were no strangers to clag mate. That's a clip I found, I didn't take it myself, sorry. I have seen this very loco in action though. Not a lot were built, most have been scrapped. Of the few preserved, the one in the clip I posted is the only one that is privately owned but mainline registered.
As to where it lives, just google 'East Lancashire Railway' and it should be the first link.

The British Rail Class 55 is probably nothing on US diesels, but it's a beautiful beast all the same. Long since out of service regrettably, used in the 60's, 70's and briefly the 80's.
Here are some facts and figures - the Class 55 was a diesel-electric 'Co-Co' configuration loco (two six-wheeled bogies with three axles apiece, all driven) with two Napier Deltic engines producing a total combined 3,300hp, locomotive weight 100 tons, top speed 100mph. Was in its heyday virtually the most powerful loco on British railways.

One interesting fact here - these locos were built by English Electric, who also built the Lightning jet fighter!
