Mum had a 1977 1.6 litre Golf. 48 miles per gallon and kept until 1993 cause we couldn't get parts when it finally needed them.

A few different cars in between then a second hand Golf 2.0 litre DSG diesel. 68 miles per gallon (4 litres per 100 km) and it was
a sport line with 16" wheels instead of the old shopping cart ones. Loves to sit at 75 MPH so you have to keep an eye on it. It's
a Sportline so it has massive brakes as well. It's done 300,000 km now with a few little things on the way (headlight globes etc).
Not a bad buy for $5000.

What engine?

1.5 l 4 cylinder turbo, 158 hp

Not a big one, but more than enough for the car. When you pressed the gas she took off. Quiet and smooth. Really a fun car to drive, especially ok the winding roads up in the hills.

As long as I keep it less than 80, I get between 47 and 51 mpg.

51.6 mpg at 70 mph on the way to work one morning…
