Panels indeed were on the ground EDIT: Oh you mean the larger one... hmmm

Nice one Dan. I'll bung some stuff (books etc) on a CD and send it this week.
I might have a colour pic of Gabby's kite - I know I have some of others from the 56th - I need to do some hunting.
Note that the paints used for the camouflage schemes were British (RAF) paints, and were Dark Green and Ocen Grey or Dark Sea Grey - again I'll find more details on this and include it with the CD.

Don't recall seeing a picture with just one panel removed? If I manage to make it home at a decent hour tonight I'll see if I can find one in my P-47 reference books. May take a while since there are a dozen or so of them.
 
Here is an interesting Web-site on the recovery and rebuilding of a P-47 Thunderbolt. Does not specifically shot just one cowl panel removed, but does seem to confirm the location of the removed panel on the model is correct.

Allied Fighters

It's a little slow to load, but once in, click on the "Dottie Mae" section, the go to the "Nose Art" selection and it shows pictures several of the various cowl panels. Looks to me like the panel removed in the scale model is accurate.
Still searching for other pics.
 
I cannot wait to see your completed build Dan. This is one of my favorite P-47 along with Little Demon and the one in Bucksnort's siggy.

No problem. I just came accross that web-site this morning and am now trying to find out if the National Geogrphic show on this P-47 is available for purchase. Doesn't looks like it, but it is on NG Chanel on Feb22nd @ 3 AM. Will have to have my sister TIVO it for me.
