Time for an update….
Spent some time last weekend on starting to make a new set of ribs (didn't like the last set !) out of a thicker gauge of Aluminum. This has given me a better profile on each rib and they are also substantially stronger. Only problem is…they're a real b*tch to form the fuselage curves on…they distort like b*ggery !. It doesn't matter how many clamps I use, how small a section I try and bend….they all come out distorted and it takes about half an hour on each one tidying it up. That's the problem with Aluminum, each time you bend it or hit it with a hammer, it stretches. B*m !
Anyway, finished the set this weekend and with some….sorry, lots
!... of help and enthusiasm from Tony (AKA Rocketeer the Riveteer !), my '51 has started to look like a plane. Basically, we spent around 7 hours plus this weekend working on the bottom half of the cockpit tub that is now nearing completion…nigh on 700 rivets cut to length, rivet holes drilled and countersunk followed by lots and lots of noise from the rivet gun and compressor (My neighbours love me …teehee). My back garden is now covered in Ali swarf, snipped off bits of rivets and two…yes TWO !!!, broken drill bits and a slack handful of swear words.
Sunday we did the riveting on the decking…great for back ache and decking sized imprints on each knee, so today, we decided to raise the whole tub to a better working height (hence the dodgy shot of me climbing in ready for another bout of riveting, standing an wheel ramp balanced on a small Ali step.). Net result…still got back ache, no decking imprints in the knees and me suffering from vertigo !.
Right, if you haven't fallen asleep yet, on with pics. First one looks a bit of a mess (I am not a tidy person Ok…) with the first set of ribs in yellow primer. Then I ran out of yellow and started on the green. Don't worry, they will all be sprayed with correct colour very soon. Next weekend hopefully if the weather is OK !.
As she stands at the moment, the protective plastic is off, all ribs are now fully riveted in place and the longerons are ready. Plans for the next few weeks are to make the mounts for the rudder assembly bar and get them fitted, and then start to make the various panels that fit in between them. Oh... and get the stick mounted !.
