Yikes! It looks like a bad result was avoided! I'm sure you'll get it squared away with a new matt coat!

Thanks chaps!
I found another bottle of Tamiya Flat Base lurking in the paints cabinet, which is handy, as the LHS is closed for two weeks, with Iris away on her annual trip to the far north of Scotland.
But Sod's Law, I'm having a bit of an 'off' day today, and far too stiff to attempt to use the airbrush - the ceiling, floor, table, chairs etc would get a good coating, but not the model !
So I'll have a break, and see what things are like tomorrow.

Thanks Geo - bl**dy frustrating when this happens. I wanted to try to get it all finished by the end of this week if possible. Still might make it though.

Yippee !
I finally got a reasonable matt coat done !
After some anti-inflammatory tablets, and a couple of hours kip, I felt a bit better - still a bit stiff and aching, but able to use the airbrush.
I mixed some matt clear using Humbrol 'Clear' and Tamiya Flat Base and, knowing from experience that the 'Clear' requires more of the FB compared to when using 'Future', I gave it a good 'dollop'. Having tested it on a small area beneath the tail plane, using a paint brush, the first coat was sprayed and allowed to dry for around 30 -40 minutes.
This looked far too matt, and ever so slightly 'misty', with a slight grey tinge, indicating that too much FB had been added to the 'Clear', so a little more 'Clear' was mixed in, and a second coat sprayed.
This was far better, although still a touch on the matt side. But, once it's settled for around 12 or more hours, a very light polish with a soft cloth should 'take the edge off', and impart a very subtle sheen to the finish.
Allowing for the age of the aircraft at the time depicted, some fading and general 'paint wear' would be expected. The photo of Stan's aircraft makes it appear rather dark, compared to the model, but having 'played around' with the contrast of the pic, I'm fairly satisfied that the apparent appearance is due to the quality of the reproduction, and the original print contrast. Looking at other pics from the same period, both colour and monochrome, I think I've got the tones reasonably close, and I'm relatively happy with the results so far.
The prop, canopy frames and cockpit door have also been given a coat of clear matt, with the latter also having the 'Make sure door is closed...' decal also being added, taken from the HGW decal sheet, of which more later.
All being well, I hope to get the 'polishing' and further detail painting done tomorrow, along with the exhausts and other remaining bits and pieces.

Thanks awfully old chap !
It's been drying and curing for a couple of hours now, and there's still a light 'misty' look, so I think I'll re-mix a little more 'Clear', and give it light re-spray tomorrow.

Thanks very much chaps !
Now that it's had around 20 hours to settle down, I'm still not 100% happy with the finish. It's a touch too matt, with a slight 'dusty' look in some areas, indicating that too much FB has been added to the mix.
I've re-mixed the 'Clear' and 'Flat Base', and I'm just waiting for a trial area to fully dry, to check the appearance, before giving the model a light re-spray.
Might have more pics later.

"Descriptive word, usually depicting a person or thing. If referring to a person, theres Lots of confidence, and an aura of almost detachment. In general, Means very suave, very smooth, ultra-cool.

"That guy over there is so schmick"
"My car is totally schmick" "

ok, I spelt it wrong and added an 'O'

Schmick, eh?
Thanks Michael !
Well maybe it's even more schmick now (or should that be schmicker?), as I've succesfully re-sprayed the new mix of clear matt, and the finish is much more to my liking.
The canopy frames have been done, and the door, as well as a clear coat to the tyres, although they need a bit of 'smoothing out' with another coat, and a semi-gloss coat to the wheels.
PIC 1. How the model looks so far.
PIC 2. The windscreen and canopy frames painted, clear coated, and the masking removed, but awaiting the removal of masking tape residue, and a polish.
PIC 3. The cockpit door, painted and with the decal added, and awaiting some detail painting and the addition of the crowbar. The 'Make sure door is closed ...' label is not strictly accurate for this particular aircraft, as this style came into use on the CBAF-built 'BL' serial range, four months after P8709 was built, but as I didn't have the correct, 'broken' style, applied top and bottom horizontally, this will have to do !
PIC 4. Having checked numerous wartime pics, I established that the tyre 'slip' indicators were indeed applied, though whether in white, or yellow, it was hard to tell. I opted for yellow. The tyres will have a further matt coat applied, and the wheels a subtle semi-matt /semi-gloss coat applied, and will be fitted once the main gear and tail wheel are in place, in order to align the 'flat' spots filed onto the tyres.
PIC 5. Prop and spinner painted, weathered, the data stencils added, and clear coated.

Next step is to paint and fit the gunsight, followed by the windscreen, then add the latch to the canopy and fit that, along with the door, before continuing with the remaining construction and detailing stages.
Thank again for the positive comments, and I'll post more soon.
