Pic 1 - basswood fuselage form turned by a friend on his lathe.

Pic 2 - carving patterns cut out in .060 styrene, used to get the proper profile at both ends.

Pic 3 - fuselage form primed and sanded, ready for vacuforming

Pic 4 5 - getting an idea of what it will look like. If you haven't guessed, this dude is going to be BIG !!

Looking great Andy! Are you going to do any of the interior?

The port side windows will be painted over as they were when they installed the five long range fuel cells along that row of seats. I will add a small bit of interior to the cockpit, but not much can be seen through the small row of windows. I will do whatever looks right so that it's not completely "see through". Starboard side windows will be clear but probably nothing to see through them. I think I will leave most of the wood mold inside the plane for some stability, Not sure that the vac fuselage would stand up to the weight of the wings and tail.

Hi hawkeye2an,
I was absent for half a year so I missed the start of your outstanding scratchbuilding. I was highly electrified by your vac-machine and spontanly decided to build a replica for my own use. Thanks! :love4:

Now that the P-51D is done it's time to move on with this one.

Frame for the vac mold, IT'S BIG !!!!
